Built For The Green Life - Behind The Scenes

At Naked Kitchens, we believe that kitchens are built for life. Beautiful kitchens, designed from the ground up to be built for your life and all the beautiful chaos it can bring.

What could a kitchen look like if you were more than a gardener, more than just an average horticulturalist, and wanted to bring that into your kitchen? Well, your kitchen would be built for the green life.

Here’s how we did it…

It all starts with the kitchen. We chose the soft pink of meadow thistle, a v-groove finish adding texture, which pops as a background to the copious amounts of foliage in front of it.

The brass splashback complements the copper pans dotted across the shot, and the open shelving unit is painted with misted fen, a subtle green. The lamp, a terracotta pendant from our friends over at Pooky, extends the terracotta used in the pots up to the ceiling, bringing the room together.

And the black and white school photos? Not, as one cheeky suggestion went, from Jamie’s youth, but his father’s…

Now, with the easy bit done, how do we make a kitchen fit for the green life?

We found almost everything from our home here at RAF West Raynham. The grasses came from just outside the hangars, the mat of green moss we used to fashion the carpet was taken from the runway, and even the bluebells were appropriated from a wild growth outside our hangar.

Greenhouses were raided for everything else, including potted flowers and more. The ivy you see cascading down the wall on the left-hand side of the shot was actually found on the roof of someone’s shed, where it had sat for too many years.

“Don’t work with animals or babies,” so the adage goes. I’d love to tell you we bucked the trend when we tried adding the final flourish to our shot - Monty & Arthur, the Everett family dogs.

Problem 1: They were both more interested in anything other than sitting still, so they kept exiting stage left.

Solution: Ham hidden in the grasses would keep them focused on their roles, right?

Problem 2: They ended up knocking the plants everywhere, and we got some rather splendid images of the back of them, which were not at all blurry.

Problem 3: We ran out of ham.

Final solution: The shot would work just as well without the dogs… (sorry Monty!)

And the point of creating a kitchen with a garden in/on/through it? That Naked Kitchens are built for life. But they’re not built for our lives, they’re built for yours - how you use your kitchen (or don’t). That’s the beauty of a bespoke Naked Kitchen.
